Practical questions

A prolonged erection is an emergency, not a success

An erection that will not settle can be a medical emergency, even if it followed treatment intended to help erections. Do not treat duration as evidence that a product worked well. Delay can damage penile tissue and future function; a routine website message is not an emergency pathway.

Know the time and seek help

Seek emergency assessment for an erection lasting around three to four hours; do not wait longer to see whether it becomes painful. Get advice earlier if there is significant pain, an injury, uncertainty about the start time or a condition-specific emergency plan. NHS guidance uses an earlier urgent threshold for painful erections in sickle cell disease. Follow your treating team’s plan.

Bring facts, not an improvised remedy

Tell the emergency team when it began, whether it is painful, any injury, blood disorder and every medicine or substance used. Include erection treatments and non-prescription supplements without embarrassment. Do not inject a supposed reversal medicine, take borrowed tablets, apply ice or attempt drainage yourself. Sexual activity is not a reliable way to end a prolonged erection and can delay necessary care.

Review prevention after the emergency

Once urgent care is complete, ask who will review the cause and any future erection treatment. Keep the discharge summary and stopping instructions. Do not restart the same product because the next erection seems shorter. Recurrent shorter episodes also deserve discussion; the team should explain whether a blood condition, medicine or another cause needs investigation, without promising that one visit eliminates every future risk.

Common questions

Must it hurt before I seek emergency care?

No. An abnormally persistent erection needs urgent assessment even when pain is limited.

Can I wait for a booking reply?

No. Use emergency care for a prolonged erection rather than a routine enquiry channel.

Should I hide an unprescribed product?

No. Accurate product and timing information helps the emergency team treat you safely.

Questions before arranging an appointment?

Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
